Essential Gear for Mountain Biking: What You Need to Get Started

Writer: Nicky JenningsNicky Jennings

Mountain biking is an exciting way to explore trails, challenge yourself, and enjoy the outdoors. But before you hit the dirt, you’ll need the right equipment to ensure a safe and enjoyable ride. Whether you’re completely new to the sport or looking to refine your setup, here’s a guide to the essential gear you need to start mountain biking.

1. A Mountain Bike That Fits Your Needs

Not all mountain bikes are the same, and choosing the right one depends on where and how you plan to ride. The three main types of mountain bikes are:

  • Hardtail: These bikes have front suspension only, making them lighter and more affordable. They’re great for beginners and riders tackling smoother trails.

  • Full-Suspension: These bikes have both front and rear suspension, providing better comfort and control on rough terrain.

  • Rigid: With no suspension, rigid bikes are less common for mountain biking but can be good for bikepacking or smoother trails.

Fit is crucial, your bike should match your height and riding style. A properly sized bike will be more comfortable and easier to handle on the trails.

2. A Quality Helmet

A helmet is non-negotiable when it comes to mountain biking. Look for one that is:

  • Certified for mountain biking safety standards.

  • Well-ventilated to keep you cool on long rides.

  • Properly fitted so it stays secure during a crash.

3. Protective Gear

  • Gloves: Provide grip, reduce vibrations, and protect your hands in case of a fall.

  • Knee Pads: A great option for riders of all abilities, but certainly for more aggressive riding or downhill riding.

  • Glasses: Protect your eyes from dust, debris, and sunlight.

4. Proper Footwear

Your shoes can make a big difference in bike control and comfort. You have two main options:

  • Flat Pedal Shoes: Designed with sticky rubber soles to grip flat pedals. Great for beginners and technical riders.

  • Clipless Shoes: These attach to clipless pedals (confusing name, I know) and provide more pedaling efficiency. They require practice but can be beneficial for endurance riders.

5. Hydration System

Staying hydrated is crucial, especially on longer rides. Options include:

  • Water bottles: Mounted on your bike’s frame.

  • Hydration packs: Backpacks with built-in water reservoirs and a drinking tube, ideal for longer rides.

6. Basic Repair Kit

Mountain biking often takes you far from help, so carrying a small repair kit is essential. A well-prepared rider should have:

  • A spare tube or tubeless repair kit.

  • A mini pump or CO2 inflator.

  • Tire levers for fixing flats.

  • A multi-tool with Allen wrenches, a chain breaker, and screwdrivers.

7. Appropriate Clothing

  • Moisture-wicking jersey or shirt to keep you cool and dry.

  • Padded shorts or bibs for comfort on longer rides.

  • Weather-appropriate layers, including a lightweight rain jacket for unpredictable conditions.

8. Lights and Visibility Gear (If Riding in Low Light)

If you plan to ride early in the morning, late in the evening, or in shaded forests, lights will improve your visibility. A bright front light and a red rear light make sure you can see and be seen.

9. Trail Map or GPS Device

If you’re exploring new trails, a handlebar-mounted GPS device or a smartphone app like Trailforks or Strava can help you navigate and track your ride.

Ready to Ride?

Once you have the right gear, you’re ready to hit the trails with confidence. Investing in proper equipment not only makes your ride safer but also improves your comfort and overall enjoyment. If you’re new to mountain biking, start with beginner-friendly trails and gradually progress as you gain confidence and skill.
